Traditional dodgeball is fun, but wet sponge dodgeball is awesome! This splashy twist on the exciting game uses soaked sponges instead of hard balls, making it both safer and more refreshing.
It’s the perfect activity for hot summer days when kids need to burn energy while staying cool. Plus, no one minds getting “out” when it means getting splashed!
How to Play
Start by dividing children into two equal teams. Have them stand on opposite sides of a playing area with a center line dividing the space.
Place a line of wet sponges along the center dividing line. Make sure you have plenty of sponges so the game keeps moving quickly.
When the game starts, players grab sponges and throw them at opponents on the other team. The wet sponges create fun splashes when they hit!
If a player gets hit with a wet sponge, they’re out and must sit on the sidelines. Players can catch sponges to stay in the game and eliminate the thrower.
The last team with players remaining wins the round. Most kids will want to play multiple rounds since the game is so fun!
Setting Up the Game & TIps For Success
Before playing, fill a few buckets with water and place them around the playing area. This allows players to re-soak their sponges when they dry out during extended play.
Use soft sponges to ensure safety. Kitchen sponges work well, but larger car-washing sponges create bigger splashes and are easier to throw.
Establish clear boundaries for the playing area before starting. Using chalk lines on pavement or cones on grass helps everyone know where to stand.
For younger children, you can modify the rules to allow them back in after a short time. This keeps everyone involved throughout the game.
